Youth Programs Flourish at Shenandoah and Lexington

Published Date: Jul 27, 2022

Coloring contests, making horse treats, swapping horse stories, horseless horse shows, learning how to lunge  all of these activities might not sound like your typical horse show happenings, but this summer through ASHBA Youth Programs they have been! Teaming up with Ellen Beard, ASHBA staff has been on the road and in our own backyard entertaining and educating the future leaders of our industry.

Through programs such as Horsing Around with Ellen Beard, and junior judging contests, ASHBA Youth Programs have reached a record number of youth this summer. At Shenandoah Classic Horse Show in Lexington, Va., more than 20 juniors played games, learned about famous American Saddlebreds, sketched their dream barns and learned some horsemanship skills. On Friday evening, our youth members put their show ring knowledge to the test with the ASHBA Junior Judging Contest.

At the Lexington Junior League Charity Horse Show in Lexington, Ky., youth members refined their showmanship with horseless horse shows, made horse treats, learned about types of bits and even sculpted their own. More than 30 young members participated in the ASHBA Junior Judging Contest, and were latertreated to an ice cream social.

“Youth are our future,” said Beard, who enjoys working with young equestrians. “We spend so much time as professionals teaching them the mechanics of our sport. We have an opportunity with these events to introduce our breed history and culture in a fun and interactive way.”

Looking forward to the World’s Championship Horse Show, ASHBA Youth Programs and Ellen Beard will bring a full slate of programming to our breed’s premier showcase. This year’s youth events include staples such as the Junior Judging Clinic and Horsing Around with Ellen Beard, as well as a slate of horseless horse show classes. Whether active in the show ring, watching friends or family compete, or meeting our community for the first time, all youth are welcome to horse around with ASHBA Youth Programs.

ASHBA and Beard thank Sally Jackson for her generous support of ASHBA youth programs.
