ASHBA Announces New Youth Council Program
Published Date: Apr 07, 2022
The American Saddlebred Horse & Breeders Association (ASHBA) is pleased to announce a new youth outreach initiative, the Youth Council. The Youth Council is an initiative to foster future leaders in the American Saddlebred industry. The mission of the Youth Council is to “Advance youth within the sport through leadership and education of the industry.”
The Youth Council includes motivated young Saddlebred enthusiasts ages 21 and under who can help to guide and shape the future of youth programs within the American Saddlebred community. “Our youth is the future of our breed and the Youth Council gives our youth a say in how we promote our breed and support our members while creating future leaders of our industry,” said David Mount, ASHBA Executive Director.
The Youth Council will be tasked with regional education, engagement and promotion. This important position will have a non-voting seat on the Board of Directors, and be heavily involved in the planning of the Youth Conference held each year on President’s Day Weekend. In 2023, the Youth Conference will be held in conjunction with the rejuvenated ASHBA Convention.
“I’m thrilled with how our leadership and members have opened the doors to gaining a youth perspective,” said Ellen Beard of Success in Saddles. “Learning the vision of young people is critical to connecting them to the sport and retaining them through their transition from juvenile exhibitors to becoming owners, breeders and competitors as adults.”
This initiative is important for the future growth and advancement of the American Saddlebred. “We need to invest our youth in this breed at an early age, so they will be the next generation of leaders and trail blazers for the American Saddlebred,” said Clif Paulson, ASHBA Board member. An inaugural group of young people from across the country will be appointed to the Council, with the vision of an application and interview process in the future.
