July 2020 ASR Diplomat of the Breed- Last Day At Sea
Published Date: Jul 27, 2020
We are pleased to announce the July 2020 ASR Diplomat of the Breed sponsored by Freedman’s is Last Day At Sea (116748). He is a fifteen-year-old American Saddlebred gelding that has shared the unique nature of the American Saddlebred with different areas of the equine and local community. Our ASR Diplomat of the Breed will receive a custom halter from Freedman Harness to promote the impact he has on the American Saddlebred community.
Last Day at Sea, affectionately known as “Icky” started as a proven winner in the Park and Park Pleasure divisions in his younger years. Now he makes #asbdreams come true as a lesson horse. He currently resides at Ancora Stables in Shelbyville, KY, where he teaches riding and driving lessons to riders of all ages and abilities.
When not teaching the next generation the joys of equestrian sport, Icky works as a breed ambassador. He has made regular appearances spotlighting both the breed’s stylish looks and superb sensibilities. Icky’s good looks made him the star of fashion photoshoots for Bluegrass Belle Hats and featured in publications such as National Horseman. He often has attended farrier clinics as a demonstration horse and introduced farriers from all equine disciplines to the breed.
Most recently, Icky was the center of attention when he attended the blessing of the animals’ service at St. James Catholic Church. The ceremony attracts people of all ages and backgrounds with their pets to be blessed. As the attendees gathered, Icky stood patiently as dogs licked his nose and sniffed his hooves. The highlight of the event came when Fr. Gary Padget sprinkled Icky with holy water and blessed him with the whole crowd looking on.
Icky spent most of his time at the blessing of the animals not just for himself, but to share the magic of the American Saddlebred with others. He received countless pats, hugs, and peppermints from excited visitors, some of whom had never touched a horse. A tiny tot in a cowboy hat fell in love with horses for the first time and sat on his back. The perfect breed ambassador, Icky took it all in stride, and never put a hoof out of place. Icky’s ability to draw and engage the crowd left intrigued visitors to ask questions about American Saddlebreds, and in turn, received educational flyers and discounts for riding lessons. It was an excellent opportunity for breed promotion and community outreach! The fan fair of this got Icky a great feature in both The Record Newspaper in Louisville and breed publication Saddle & Bridle Magazine.
Last Day At Sea again proves why we all love our breed and how Saddlebreds really can do it all! From the show ring to the community events, they draw us in and give their best effort to do the job at hand. When Icky’s not busy with lessons and being a breed ambassador, he enjoys grazing in the sun and being fed clementines by his many friends and admirers.
The American Saddlebred Registry and program sponsor Freedman Harness are honored to recognize Last Day At Sea for his exceptional service in introducing so many to the breed we love as an ASR Diplomat of the Breed.
