American Saddlebreds Draw Crowds Where Champions Meet: the Devon Horse Show

Published Date: Jun 01, 2017

Devon SaddlebredsThe American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) is delighted to have American Saddlebreds represented at the Devon Horse Show.

In addition to many prestigious American Saddlebreds competing on Devon’s Dixon Oval this week, the breed is being represented in fine fashion by CHCumberland Crescent. “Red Dawg,” as he is affectionately known by his connections, is a 19-year-old chestnut gelding, who amassed an impressive show record in the Park and Three-Gaited divisions, including a Reserve World’s Champion of Champions finish in 2010. Trainer Alicia Owens and owners Ed and Candi Aversenti, an ASHA Board of Directors member, are proud to have their horse greeting thousands of fans at this historic and popular event.

"We are always grateful to have the chance to share our Saddlebreds with the general public, but being able to share a horse like Red Dawg, an individual who epitomizes all of the best things about the Saddlebred breed, at a show with an equine tradition as strong as Devon makes this a particularly wonderful opportunity. Thousands of people come through these gates every day, and while many of them are coming with a natural curiosity about horses, most haven't ever had an opportunity to get up close and touch one. To have that first contact be with a Saddlebred is priceless in terms of breed promotion." said Alicia Owens.

"There are few opportunities to put our wonderful breed in front of the general public and even fewer with crowds as large and engaged in the horses as Devon's audience," said ASHA Immediate Past President Bob Funkhouser. "We are so grateful to Alicia Owens and the Scottfield Stables crew for taking the time out of their show schedule to bring the American Saddlebred to the Devon audience."

The ASHA is grateful to the many volunteers and American Saddlebred enthusiasts who are working hard to get our wonderful breed exposed to the public. In addition to meeting “Red Dawg,” ASHA has hundreds of promotional materials on hand for distribution.

If you are not able to attend the Devon Horse Show, but would like to learn more about the American Saddlebred breed, Nealia McCracken and Ashley Saunders Russo are doing live commentary during the show’s webcast on USEF Network.
